Savannah Landscaping FAQs
Answers shaped by coastal heat, sandy soil and big live oaks.
How often should a Savannah lawn be mowed in summer?
From late spring through early fall, warm-season grasses like centipede and St. Augustine grow fast in the heat and afternoon rain, so most yards need cutting every week. Keeping the mower blade high helps the grass shade its own roots and hold moisture in our sandy soil.
Our yard sits under live oaks. What can we plant that will actually grow?
Heavy oak shade and Spanish moss drip are hard on most turf. A good design swaps thin grass for shade-loving beds of ferns, azaleas, hollies and liriope, adds a mulched path where people walk and keeps lawn only where it gets several hours of sun.
What goes into a new landscape installation?
It usually starts with clearing and grading, then improving the soil, setting bed edges, planting trees and shrubs in the right order, adding mulch and finishing with lighting or a path. Planting in the cooler months gives roots time to settle before the summer heat. Ask about an installation →
Which hardscape materials hold up in coastal humidity?
Pavers, natural stone and tabby-style concrete all work well here, as long as the base is built to drain. Shady, damp patios can grow algae, so a slight slope away from the house and joints that let water through matter as much as the surface you choose.
Our sandy soil dries out in a day. Will an irrigation system help?
Yes. Water runs straight through sandy coastal soil, so short, regular cycles work better than one long soak. Drip lines in planting beds and separate zones for sun and shade keep water where it is needed and cut down on runoff.
A big limb is hanging over the roof. Who should handle it?
Large limbs over a house, especially on mature oaks, call for an experienced tree crew with the right rigging. Regular pruning of shrubs and young trees also opens up airflow, which helps with fungus in our humid summers. Check with the city before removing any large tree. Request tree and shrub care →
Is sod or seed better for a bare yard in Savannah?
Sod gives you a finished lawn right away and holds sandy soil in place during summer downpours. Centipede and St. Augustine are usually laid as sod or plugs, and late spring into early summer is the best window so the roots knit before cooler weather.
